Yesterday Howie and I went and toured the 2012 HGTV Dream Home that is in Midway, Utah. It was neat to see it all in person. I enter to win their Dream Home every year. It has yet to happen, much to my dismay. On our tour they told us that on the very first day they started the contest they received 12 million entries. Wow.

The house was neat to see and had amazing views, but if we won it we would definitely sell it.

The master bedroom closets were way too small.

That is just a deal breaker in a million dollar home.

In fact, it is so special that a lady in my branch asked me to put her down in my will as the beneficiary of all of my clothes when I die.

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner at my parents house last night. I brought a Green Bean Casserole and Rosemary Au Gratin Potatoes. Yumm!

We had a wonderful evening watching the kids do the Nativity Story, playing a game that strained our brain to remember lyrics to old Christmas Carols and watching It's A Wonderful Life.

Howie and I had to still pick-up pies for today to take to his Dad's house so, we stopped by Village Inn on the way home because they were open until midnight. We decided, since we were there, we might as well stop in for a cup of hot chocolate. So, we did. To be honest, there was something strangely romantic about it. It was sweet.

We woke early this morning to attend church at our branch. Even though it was early, and Christmas Day, we had a really nice turn out which surprised me. I thought everyone would be out and about with their families. A couple from one of our nearby wards came in and sang and played the flute for us. It was wonderful. Our branch members really enjoyed it.

After church we went back to my parents house for presents and an awesome breakfast/lunch. My family made the most amazing sausage I have ever tasted. It was brown sugar and honey sausage. Oh. My. Gosh. SO good. We always open our presents that we got each other at my parents. The biggest present we got ourselves was a little thing called an iPad 2.

Yup, totally stoked about that one! We spent way too much on ourselves this year but, when you're a couple of D.I.N.K.'s that's what you do. Some other things Howie got me: Brown boots, socks, my pearl from Hawaii mounted on a ring, new PJ's, car iPhone charger, and a U of U hoodie (Go Utes!).

Things I got him: Two new belts, Old Spice gift set, 32GB flash drive for his Xbox 360, new outfit, new PJ's, and the movie Thor.

After presents we headed to Howie's Dad's house for dinner and more present opening. It was a great night and I love being able to sit around after dinner and talking with everyone. We really enjoyed our Christmas and I hope all of you did, too!

Cute Neighbor Gifts

I'm so excited about our neighbor gifts this year.

Three rolls of wrapping paper (baby, birthday, and wedding themed) all bundled up with a note that says "We're wrapping up another year!" So clever! I wish I could take all the credit, but my Mom gave me the idea from one of her neighbors that did it for her last year.

Howie called me up at work one day last week and said "I'd like to go on a date this Saturday." I said "Ok, do you know what you would like to do?" "Yeah, I want to go to the temple since it's been a while since we've been. Walk around and look at the lights, and then eat at The Roof." Be still my heart. Howie rarely plans things out so, you can imagine my amazement when he had a detailed itinerary of what he would like to go and do. "Ok, I'll make the reservation!"

And so, we did sealings in the temple.

We walked around the new Deseret Book store.

Got warm in the JSM building.

And enjoyed the beautiful view from the 10th floor.

Here is a rose in glass that they had on display at The Roof. Cool, huh?

Dinner was marvelous. I've been to The Roof once before for a wedding dinner and I couldn't really remember what I thought of it. But, this was really good. I highly recommend the chicken cordon blue.

It was a great night to spend together. I love all these little date nights that we've been having. It's good we've been having them because I start school soon and who knows what kind of free time I'll have after that!

Zoo Lights

Last night we went to Zoo Lights!

This is the first year we've ever been. We decided to do this instead of doing A Candelight Christmas. We had a lot of fun and it wasn't too cold out for the activity. (The hot chocolate helped with that!)

The tigers were out and more active than I have ever seen them. They were playing for the crowd and growling at each other. It was so awesome to see! I could've sat and watched them all night.

We may have to start making this another annual tradition. We really had a good time. It was neat to see the animals when they are more active. In the summer they are just lazy and sleeping. Definitely an activity worth the $6 admission price.

It's funny how much this album reminds me of Christmas when I was young...

I got it in the $5 CD bin at Walmart. So worth it! I don't remember ever thinking the cover of this CD was so peculiar, but it is peculiar, isn't it? Very corny. I love the addition of the reindeer. I wonder who's idea that was.

Aside from getting all of my Christmas decorations up this weekend, I also enjoyed a 12 hour day of shopping on Black Friday with my BFF.

Compliments

Last Sunday, Howie and I attended a missionary homecoming for one of his cousins. I had accidently set my alarm clock for 7pm instead of 7am that morning so, we ran a little late leaving the house to be there on time. We sat through the entire meeting and when we were finally ready to get up and leave, a young girl (maybe 16 or 17?) jumped out of her seat, which was two rows behind us, just to come over and tell me "I love your hair! I just had to tell you." Because of running late that day, I didn't feel like my hair was really up to par. Certainly not to a standard worthy of receiving compliments from random strangers. I love receiving unexpected compliments like this, but I feel bad when I get them, too. My whole entire life, I've always struggled with the small act of accepting a compliment. I appear to accept it from the outside, but inside I always doubt them. It's just part of my nature.

I remember once when I was around 15ish, I had complained to my Mom about what a bad hair day I was having. Later that same day we went to a family Christmas party and one of my cousins came up to me and complimented me on my hair and said it was "Cute!". I immediately turned around and said "Did my Mom tell you to say that to me??" She looked at me all confused and said "No, I just wanted you to know I thought your hair looked cute today."

So, because of my insecurities and how I feel when I receive compliments, I find that I rarely ever give compliments. It's sad, but true. So, when this girl went so out of her way on Sunday to tell me she loved my curly red hair, I was taken back. But, I've thought of it ever since! I admire people that can go up to complete strangers and brighten their day with something as simple as a compliment. I challenge you to compliment someone today. They will appreciate it!

And just for fun, watch this video. These two Purdue University students used to stand outside every Wednesday from 12:30 to 2pm and give out "Free Compliments" to people who walked by. What an awesome idea!

I am very, very, proud and excited to finally announce that I have applied and been accepted into The David Eccles School of Business Program at the University of Utah! It has been four years since I got my Associates degree and I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to school. I'm also just a tad nervous. I thought, for sure, I would be the oldest one in Orientation this past Tuesday, but I wasn't. There were actually a number of people that seemed to be about my same age and older. Of course, there were the younger kids there, too. But I didn't feel out of place for one second. I knew it's where I was supposed to be. It was comforting to know that we were all there with one common goal in mind and that is to get an education. I felt a sense of camaraderie with my fellow students even though we'd never met or spoken. I'll be honest with you, I have struggled with this decision to return to school from the day I started to ponder it. Is the timing right? Is it wise to be starting such an endeavor when Howie and I are trying to start a family, too? Can we afford it? Can I keep my job AND go to school? Will it take too long? Which degree should I go for? Or as my best friends Dad put it when he found out I was considering going back to school "Is it worth it?" (I'm not quite sure if that was a jab at my age or just academics in general. Either way, it got a confused reaction from me.)

This past Monday night, the night before Orientation, I laid awake in bed wondering if I was making the right decision. It was then that I was prompted to go and read my Patriarchal Blessing. When these types of promptings hit me, I act on them every single time because that's what my P.B. is for. I'm continuously learning about it and it's meanings and in turn growing stronger in my faith in it. It reconfirms my testimony every time. I started to read it in it's entirety and I paused when I got to a section that said:

"Gain education that you may have the skills and the knowledge which will help you in your life to achieve and accomplish that work you shall be called to do."

I know that this is what my Father in Heaven wants me to be doing. I know he will provide a way for it to happen if I just do my part and have faith in Him.

Bring on January 9th!

Pennsylvania and New Joy-see

Howie got to come along with me on a business trip to Pennsylvania. He actually served his mission in Pittsburgh so, PA was nothing too new for him. But, he had never been to Philly before so, we made it a point to go there...twice.

We wanted to try one of the best Philly Cheesesteaks in town so, we ventured over to Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks to see what all the fuss was about. These two places (which are right across the street from each other) have been on just about every food show known to man. The original plan was to get one sandwich from each place and split them, but once we got there Howie only wanted to try Pat's so, we both got one from Pat's. Howie got disgusting cheesewhiz on his. Ew. Too rich for me.

I'm a Philly Cheesesteak with provolone and dill pickle kind of girl. Mine was delicious.

Philly Hard Rock Cafe!

So, I'm a reality TV junkie and I love the show on Style called Jerseylicious. I know, I know. The cast is a tad on the dramatic side. But, it's entertaining to me. The show takes place in a salon called the "Gatsby Salon" and it's in Green Brook, NJ. Since we were headed that way I decided to look to see how far away it was. It was only an hour! So, I booked an appointment in hopes to meet some of the cast. Much to my excitement, Monday October 24th just happened to be a cast day! They didn't have the whole cast there, just two of the main characters. But, I was so excited!

Here is me, Doria (from the show) and Denise (she cut my hair). Both cast members were fully booked so, I couldn't get in with them (shucks). But Denise was really sweet and I was able to ask her a lot of questions about the show. I'm sure she gets it ALL the time.

And here I am with Tracy! She was the number one person I wanted to meet. I was so happy she worked that day. She is one of the shows main characters.

It was so fun to meet them.

The last day we were in PA we drove back to Philly again. We didn't get to see enough of the city the first time we went. We managed to fit in a lot of stuff. First we stopped off at the Liberty Bell.

Swung by Benjamin Franklin's resting place.

And raced up the "Rocky Steps".

After that we were headed home. The trip was short, but sweet.

Fall Is In The Air

I went up Millcreek Canyon today by myself while Howie slept.

It is absolutely gorgeous right now.

Tomorrow morning we leave for Pennsylvania. Yet another business trip I get to take this year, but this time Howie gets to tag along. I can't wait to see New England in the Fall.

Witchapalooza!

This past Saturday was Witchapalooza-Girl's-Night-Out at Gardner Village. It was a fun way to kick off this festive Halloween season. We enjoyed a lovely lunch/early dinner and then it was on with the show. The show this year is called 'The Taming of The Brew'. It was pretty funny. We all enjoyed it.

Others in attendance, but not pictured, are my cousin Chelsea and my sister Sheena.

We had to get a picture with a witch.

Genelle would probably not be happy that I posted this picture of us, but it was the best one we took on the bench. Good thing she doesn't read my blog. Hehe. We were twiners with our shirts.

Last weekend we were blessed with a wonderful General Conference. I'm always happy to sit at home all weekend in my pj's and listen to the words of our General Authorities. We are so lucky to have such strong members of our church to give us guidance. I have come to rely more and more on their words and teachings especially with our new callings in our branch. I am now the second counselor in the Relief Society. I'm still getting used to it and learning everyone's names (i'm almost as bad as members of our congregation when it comes to remembering names!). But i'm thankful for the calling and the opportunity to serve them. They have such strong testimonies and I love hearing them share them each month. They have become a great strength to me and I'm lucky to know them.

The Fair

Today was a good old time at the Salt Lake Fair!

At The Fair, It's all about the food.

We didn't try any of this strange stuff, but it was fun to look. Scorpion anyone? How about one dipped in chocolate?

We rode down this massive slide. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face as we went down it. I seriously felt like I was 7 years old.

Frozen banana dipped in chocolate and rolled in nuts. Sounds good to me!

I've never tried a funnel cake before so I told Howie we had to try one before we left. It was sugar overload at The Fair! It was mighty tasty.

A good time was had by all.

I can't believe it's been 10 years. Today I am reflecting on that day and the people that lost their lives. I'm so glad I've already documented my 9/11 story. It's neat to be able to go back and read it. I came very close to being caught up in the middle of all of that and I can't help but think that there was a higher power involved.

I am so proud to be an American.

Gambling in Wendover, NV

Yesterday we celebrated my youngest sister's 21st birthday by taking her to Wendover.

I'm a big loser. I lost $60.

Last Sunday, my BFF and I had the opportunity to go and see Adele in concert together.

She is my new favorite singer.
Absolutely amazing.
I only wish she was booked at a different venue.
One that didn't serve beer to people without lids on the cups.
Because then they push their way through the crowd with said beer cup.
Full to the brim.
And they spill it on you.
All over your blanket, purse and shoes.
And down the back of your best friends shirt.
That was the only downer of the evening.
I seriously could've slapped that girl.
It wasn't done intentionally, but still sucked.

Trip to Baltimore, MD

I got to go to Baltimore last week for work. It was a quick little trip and I didn't get to see much. The goal was to get some free time so I could do the hour drive to Washington D.C., but work got in the way of my fun on my business trip. It's a shame, really.

I got to visit the Hard Rock Cafe.

And eat some amazing French Toast at the Honey Bee Diner.

Those are the only two pictures I took with my camera. It's beautiful in Maryland. It really is. But most of the beauty I saw was while I was driving around and I can't very well whip out my camera and start taking pictures while I do that, now can I? It was a neat getaway and I always enjoy going to new places.

My family and I went camping last week in Fremont Indian State Park. On our last day, my niece Mercedes wrote this in the dirt "for the whole family".

Chocolate

I have been craving chocolate lately.

Like crazy.

We went to Smith's and got THE best chocolate cake ever.

Before I knew it, I was down to one single slice left.

Howie had only had one chunk of it.

Today he came home to see that this was all that remained of the cake.

He turned to me and asked "Gee, did you have any help with that?"
To which I replied "Yes...a fork."

Kathryn Stockett's 'The Help' Turned Down 60 Times Before Becoming a Best Seller

If you ask my husband my best trait, he’ll smile and say, “She never gives up.” But if you ask him my worst trait, he’ll get a funny tic in his cheek, narrow his eyes and hiss "She. Never. Gives. Up."

It took me a year and a half to write my earliest version of The Help. I’d told most of my friends and family what I was working on. Why not? We are compelled to talk about our passions. When I’d polished my story, I announced it was done and mailed it to a literary agent.

Six weeks later, I received a rejection letter from the agent, stating, “Story did not sustain my interest.” I was thrilled! I called my friends and told them I’d gotten my first rejection! Right away, I went back to editing. I was sure I could make the story tenser, more riveting, better.

A few months later, I sent it to a few more agents. And received a few more rejections. Well, more like 15. I was a little less giddy this time, but I kept my chin up. “Maybe the next book will be the one,” a friend said. Next book? I wasn’t about to move on to the next one just because of a few stupid letters. I wanted to write this book.

A year and a half later, I opened my 40th rejection: “There is no market for this kind of tiring writing.” That one finally made me cry. “You have so much resolve, Kathryn,” a friend said to me. “How do you keep yourself from feeling like this has been just a huge waste of your time?”

That was a hard weekend. I spent it in pajamas, slothing around that racetrack of self-pity—you know the one, from sofa to chair to bed to refrigerator, starting over again on the sofa. But I couldn’t let go of The Help. Call it tenacity, call it resolve or call it what my husband calls it: stubbornness.

After rejection number 40, I started lying to my friends about what I did on the weekends. They were amazed by how many times a person could repaint her apartment. The truth was, I was embarrassed for my friends and family to know I was still working on the same story, the one nobody apparently wanted to read.

Sometimes I’d go to literary conferences, just to be around other writers trying to get published. I’d inevitably meet some successful writer who’d tell me, “Just keep at it. I received 14 rejections before I finally got an agent. Fourteen. How many have you gotten?”

By rejection number 45, I was truly neurotic. It was all I could think about—revising the book, making it better, getting an agent, getting it published. I insisted on rewriting the last chapter an hour before I was due at the hospital to give birth to my daughter. I would not go to the hospital until I’d typed The End. I was still poring over my research in my hospital room when the nurse looked at me like I wasn’t human and said in a New Jersey accent, “Put the book down, you nut job—you’re crowning.”

It got worse. I started lying to my husband. It was as if I were having an affair—with 10 black maids and a skinny white girl. After my daughter was born, I began sneaking off to hotels on the weekends to get in a few hours of writing. I’m off to the Poconos! Off on a girls’ weekend! I’d say. Meanwhile, I’d be at the Comfort Inn around the corner. It was an awful way to act, but—for God’s sake—I could not make myself give up.

In the end, I received 60 rejections forThe Help. But letter number 61 was the one that accepted me. After my five years of writing and three and a half years of rejection, an agent named Susan Ramer took pity on me. What if I had given up at 15? Or 40? Or even 60? Three weeks later, Susan sold The Help to Amy Einhorn Books.

The point is, I can’t tell you how to succeed. But I can tell you how not to: Give in to the shame of being rejected and put your manuscript—or painting, song, voice, dance moves, [insert passion here]—in the coffin that is your bedside drawer and close it for good. I guarantee you that it won’t take you anywhere. Or you could do what this writer did: Give in to your obsession instead.

And if your friends make fun of you for chasing your dream, remember—just lie.

House Hunting

Howie and I haven't officially started our hunt for a new home yet, but Howie's Dad and Stepmom are keeping an eye out for us. They found this gem of a home pictured below in downtown Salt Lake. We poked through the windows and I must admit, I've kind of fallen in love.

I would want to give the outside a face lift. Not too fond of the paint color. Even bringing back the original brick color would be neat, I think.

I never thought I would ever consider an older home (much older home). They are...well, old, for one thing, next to no closet space, small bedrooms, etc. But, I see so much character in this home and the fact that it is somewhat updated (like the kitchen) makes it much more appealing. We've read online that the bathrooms are updated, too. Howie isn't sold, but we haven't seen inside for ourselves yet. I can't stop thinking about it though. I've already invisioned Christmas gatherings and hot summer days in the back yard. The house needs work, don't get me wrong. The floors on the main level need some love and the landscaping is pretty shabby. There is also a basement that may have some income potential for us. I can't wait to see inside and walk around. Maybe i'll post some additional pictures of it.

I don't know if we'll end up in it, but it sure is fun to entertain the idea for now. The home was built in 1908. How cool is that?

Howie's 29th Birthday

We had a great time today celebrating Howie's birthday. He asked me to take the day off work so we could just spend time together. I was all for it. What a beautiful day to do it, too. We packed up a picnic lunch and took it to Liberty Park.

Is it just me or is the best thing about eating Cheetos the part where you get to lick the cheese flavoring off your fingers?

"Hey Tara. Is there something in my teeth?"

We wanted to rent a boat and take it out on the pond in Liberty Park, but it was too hot out. Maybe next time. I haven't done that since I was a little kid so, we will definitely re-visit that idea another day. After the park we went to Leatherby's for a delicious ice cream and to cool off. Then we went home and took a three hour nap. What a great, relaxing day. I'm so glad Howie told me to take the day off. Happy Birthday, sweetie!

Happy 29th Birthday To Me!

Today is my 29th birthday.

I came into work this morning to this lovely plate filled with frosted brownies made just for me by a co-worker. (They're actually Costco brownies with homemade frosting, but still delicious.) Can't wait to dive into one of those!

Today marks the beginning of the last year I have in my 20's. It's a little surreal. I didn't think I would feel any different getting closer and closer to 30, but it is a little nerve wracking. I'm getting older. There is no denying it. A lot of people my age already have several children. I have two cats and a husband.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Anniversary Weekend - 6/25-6/28

Last weekend we celebrated our anniversary by using my Aunt and Uncle's cabin in Fruitland, Utah. They are so nice to have let us use it! We loved it down there.

You might remember this cabin from this post last year. I went up last year with my family but Howie couldn't make it. But this time we had it all to ourselves! We made the most out of it and took up some yummy food to make while we were there. The first night we had homemade french bread pizza.

The next morning I made us some pancakes, eggs and turkey bacon. (50% less fat!)

We played some Wheel of Fortune. Howie is a little bit of a sore loser when it comes to this game. It's not my fault I'm so good at it!

Then we took one of the 4-wheelers for a spin. Howie rode on the back of one first because he wasn't sure he wanted to drive one himself. He had a scary experience on one a long time ago and it has ruined him. But, we had fun riding it together.

We headed back to the cabin for some lunch after our ride. Howie was kind enough to grill us up some beef patties.

Howie wanted to take a nap so, I took a 4-wheeler off-roading.

When I got back he was ready to try one out himself! Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes upon this blessed photo because I did NOT think I would ever see the day...

He had fun on it. He told me it was not as bad as he thought it would be. I'm so glad! I really enjoy them so, I'm glad he does, too.

Back at the cabin, we enjoyed a delicious chicken caesar salad over a game of Mancala.

And then the activity I looked forward to the most...S'mores!

Howie built us a lovely fire.

It was fun sitting, chatting and star gazing by the fire. Perfect evening.

The last morning we were there we enjoyed some french toast and juice for breakfast.

We had an awesome time at our home away from home. I hope they'll let us use it again!

On our actual anniversary (June 28th) we went to eat at The Melting Pot!

iMac

We have joined the masses.

I'm a little scared and out of my element.

Howie and I wanted a new computer and so we decided to go with an iMac. The sales guy assured us that the transition would be easy so, I hope he is right. So far I've just taken it out of the box, plugged it in, and connected it to the internet. I already like it, but I've yet to really delve into it.

It's an interesting feeling walking out of the store you just dropped some serious cash in and flaunting to the world the expensive piece of technology you've just purchased. Howie and I both felt it. We left our local Best Buy with that huge iMac box and it was like "Here we are. Look at us and our expensive, new, modern, computer." We got to the car and Howie said to me "I almost felt like we were going to get mugged." I laughed and said "You felt that, too?!" Really scary.

Right now I have our old computer set up on our big iMac box...on the floor...so I can blog about our new computer. It's 11 o'clock at night and I'm in no mood to be reading instruction manuals.

I'm sure I'll be like every other Mac owner and take a picture of myself hugging it at some point. Or become completely obsessed like this gal. (one of my favorite You Tubers)

But for now I'm going to bed.

La Bonne Vie

Yesterday Howie and I visited a cute little sweets shop in The Grand America called La Bonne Vie. I've wanted to go ever since I heard them advertising it on the radio.

How cute is this store?!?

We enjoyed some hazlenut gelato...

And saw probably the biggest chocolate covered strawberries I've ever seen.

My main reason for going was to try their macarons. They are a French delicacy and yet we did not try them in France. Shame on us.

We went home with a strawberry one and a vanilla one.

I wanted to like them, I really did. But I did not. I'm blaming it on the fact that they were made here and not in France. Maybe one day, when we return to Paris, we can try an authentic macaron and fall in love.

Until then we are left with the fake ones.

French Fry Dreamin'

For the first time since going on my diet I actually dreamt about eating food last night. My body must be missing all of that french fry intake because that's what I ate in my dream. Apollo Burger french fries and a big cheeseburger. I remember it so clearly. The french fries were so tasty in this dream and I even had fry sauce to dip them in. I wouldn't be surprised if my hand came up to my mouth as I slept as if I really were eating them. For real. Well, I only have a couple more weeks on this diet and then I'll be done...for now. I don't think I'll fully reach my goal, but I'm going to continue to watch what I eat. I'm down 21 pounds as of this morning and it feels great.

Thanks Nutrisystem for making a program that is so easy for us food addicts to follow.

My blog has been a bit of a blah lately because we stay in all the time and don't really go anywhere and do anything since all of my food is at my house and I have to eat every 3-4 hours so, I'm hoping it will get more interesing in the weeks to come. We have fun plans for our 3 year anniversary coming up on June 28th so, I will definitely be bloggin' about that.

I don't know if any of you heard, but about two weeks ago there was a royal wedding.

I love a good, historical, wedding so I recorded it and watched every minute. Plus, there was so much hype over what Kate's dress would look like I just had to tune in and see! I really love that they aired their actual wedding ceremony. I couldn't help but pause for a moment and ponder when they got to the whole "For richer, or for poorer. In sickness and in health, till death do you part." I always get irked at that point. I am so happy that our church marries us for time and all eternity. I don't want to only be with Howie for this life, but the one after as well.

The speech that the Bishop of London gave was really cool. He had a lot of neat things to say about marriage in our day. My favorite line was:

"Marriage should transform as husband and wife make one another their work of art. It is possible to transform so long as we don't harbor ambitions to re-form our partners. There must be no coercion if the spirit is to flow. Each must give the other space and freedom."

Howie and I went to his cousin's sealing today in the Bountiful Temple. It was a beautiful sealing and I loved the bride's choice of wedding dress, colors, bouquet, etc. It all came together very nicely. When it got to the point of "for time and all eternity" I got teary-eyed. It's such a wonderful blessing and I'm glad that we can attend family sealings and be reminded of what we got ourselves into almost three years ago.

I ran/walked this today.

Yup, even though it snowed like crazy last night, it was still on! It turned out to be really nice with the colder air. I would've burned up out there if it wasn't. I lost the little chip thingy they give you to put on your shoe to track your time so, I'm not sure how long it took me to finish it, but I'm thinking it was around 1:20. Better luck next time. I haven't been training for a month so, it was my own fault. At least I finished. And I got a medal for participating!

Florida 4/24/11 to 4/28/11

I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful state of Florida this past week. My work needed someone to go and I bravely volunteered. You gotta do what you gotta do!

The day I arrived I went to check out the Tampa Hard Rock Cafe.

I would've eaten there if it hadn't been for the lack of an indoor clean air act. Shame.

Then I arrived at my hotel and beheld the view!

Gorgeous!

On Monday I had a free day to do whatever I wanted since I didn't have to officially work till Tuesday. I heard that St. Petersburg had a very impressive Holocaust Museum so, it was the very first thing I checked out.

I wouldn't go there again. I wasn't impressed with their stuff. The only cool artifact they had was a real boxcar that was used to transport Jews. Other than that it was pretty boring to walk through. And definitely not worth the $14 I paid to get in nor the hour and a half I spent there.

After the museum I headed back to the hotel to decide what I would do next. I grabbed a sandwich from a nearby Subway, changed into a swimsuit and swimsuit cover, and headed up to Clearwater, Florida. I heard the area was beautiful...and it was.

I laid out on Sand Key Beach.

Felt like a little kid when I spotted a Pirate Ship out in the distance.

And enjoyed the beach. Then I drove over to Pier 60.

Took in some more views.

And hung out at Clearwater Beach for a bit.

The first part of the trip was the real highlight and really the only part worth blogging about. The rest of my stay involved going from hospital to hospital and doing inventory counts. I also got to drive across the entire state of Florida (from St. Petersburg to West Palm Beach). West Palm Beach wasn't much to look at. At least not the area I stayed in. I didn't get a chance to visit a beach there because I worked too much. Oh well. It was still a fun trip even though I had to go alone. Howie wished he could've gone, but his work isn't too kind when it comes to only a couple of weeks notice for a vacay.

My Mountain Top

I want to shout from a mountain top and since I don't have one that's easily accessible I decided to make my blog my mountain top...

I've lost 9 pounds!

I've only been doing Nutrisystem for 11 days and I've already lost 9 pounds! This plan is amazing and it works. I can't recommend it enough. New Callings

On Saturday night (after the Real SL game) we came home and realized that I had both a missed call on my cell phone and a voicemail message. As I play the message I hear something along these lines:

"Tara this is so-and-so from the Stake and I was hoping you and Howard would be able to meet with a member of the Stake Presidency tomorrow morning. Can you call me back and let me know if that's something you'll be able to do?"

Yikes. We knew what was in store. So, I call the guy back and tell him we'll meet with them the next morning.

So...long story short...Howie got called to the position of 1st Counselor in a Branch Presidency! And I got called as a Branch Helper. This is one of those rare callings where we'll get to serve together as husband and wife. I couldn't be happier! I could tell Howie was hesitant, but he accepted it. We attended our new branch that day and we are so excited for this opportunity. The branch is in an Assisted Living Center and the attendees are all quite old. But they are all very kind and very appreciative of everything. As soon as we walked into that room for the first time I was absolutely overwhelmed with The Spirit. My heart felt so full and I just knew that we were meant to be there. I'm so grateful for this calling and I believe it is an answer to my prayers.

I'm so proud of Howie. He is my sweetheart.

Real Salt Lake Game

Last Saturday night Howie and I attended the Real Salt Lake game against the L.A. Galaxy.

I think this was their "Super Fan" section. They were crazy loud!

It was freezing cold, but we braved it for the entire game.

They got out this huge flag and passed it around half of the stadium.

Real beat L.A. Galaxy 4 to 1. They basically got their butts handed to them!

Speaking of butts...

Yup, that's David Beckham's butt.

I've reached my breaking point. I have gotten so sick of complaining about my weight that I've decided to really do something about it.

I joined...

I can't wait to get my first shipment of food.

Hello 28 days of dieting(possibly more). Here I am.

The goal = lose 30 pounds.

Should be fun.

PS: Nutrisystem is offering the lowest prices they've had since 2003. I paid $240 for a 28 day meal plan which equates to spending only $8 on food per day. That is NOT bad at all. I'll keep you updated on my progress.

It was a beautiful winter's day when the husband and wife entered into the local shopping mall together to find birthday presents for her Mother and Grandmother. "We're in then we're out." said the husband to his wife, knowing of her tendency to get sidetracked while shopping. "Of course dear." replied the wife to the husband, knowing of his complete lack of patience when it came to her tendency of getting sidetracked while shopping. The last thing her husband wanted to be doing on a Saturday afternoon was shopping and the last thing she wanted was another argument over being in the mall to begin with. The couple made their merry little way through the department store with a mission to find the perfect gifts and get out. They rounded the first corner only to behold...the handbag section. Immediately, the wife's gaze turned to the fantastic array of handbag after handbag. So bright and cheery for the upcoming Spring season. There were yellow bags. There were white bags. Even blue frilly bags. All strategically placed to distract even the most disciplined of shoppers. But one bag stood out the most of all the bags to the wife. "Ooooh!" she squeeled as she picked the pink, frilly, bag up in her hands and gave it a good squeeze. "This is SO adorable!" The husbands eyes immediately rolled into the back of his head as he suddenly realized this shopping trip would be much harder to endure than he had originally thought. But the wife barely noticed this eye roll. She was too distracted with thoughts of vacations, picnics, family gatherings, and luncheons with the girls with this bag. Her and this bag would become best of friends. Two peas in a pod. Her mind was full of all the outfits in her closet that this bag would complete. It was a match made in heaven. The husband moved fast to burst these sinful thoughts of hers. "The last thing you need is another handbag. You have so many of them!" The wife's face now sported a look of defeat. "What does that have to do with anything? Look at this bag!" She was determined for him to see the light. Surely, after some persuasion, he would come around. "Come on", he said. "Let's keep looking for your Mom and Grandma." He grabbed her by the hand and pulled her forward, forcing her to put down the frilly pink bag back into the sea of all those "other bags". No other bag quite compared. The wife conformed and moved forward with their original goal.

A day went by and the wife was still consumed with thoughts of the pink frilly bag. The fate's had conspired for them to meet, she was sure of it. But, her husband was right. She needed another handbag like she needed a hole in the head. The wife tried to move on and bury herself in her work so she could forget the pink handbag. Then, later that day, she was cleaning out her wallet when she suddenly came across a new, crisp, $100 bill that she had forgotten she had. "Oh, this is Christmas money." she thought. Then it hit her, "Wait! This is CHRISTMAS money!" Christmas money is different than the kind of money that a husband and wife work hard to bring in together and pay bills with. Christmas money is selfish money. Money that the recipient can use on whatever they choose without consulting their partner in life. Even if that be a pink, frilly, handbag that was on sale at a department store. "Yay for Christmas money!" she said as she triumphiantly held the $100 bill in her hand.

Needless to say, she ran back to the store the very next day and purchased the pink frilly handbag, guilt free. She arrived at home to a husband that was distraught because the pink bag had somehow made it's way into his home. The bag that he forbade and called "useless" STILL somehow made the 20 mile trip from the store to her closet. How could this have happened?

"Christmas money, my dear. Christmas money from your parents."

In fact, Howie is enjoying Finding Nemo for the very first time as I type this. After that it's all about The Bachelor! I love Valentine's Day.

Last week I won tickets on the radio to the premier of Midway to Heaven and I dragged my good friend Alyssa along with me.

We got a photo-op with the entire main cast.

While standing in line for autographs we got to meet Todd, Kirby's look-a-like.

He was super nice and we talked to him the whole time we stood in line.

We finally got through the line and I got a more descent picture with Michelle.

Then we asked Kirby Heyborn and Curt Doussett for a picture.

A huge tote with close to no pocket storage.

So, I LOVE my Kangaroo Keeper...

A must have for anyone that likes the look of a tote purse, but wants the storage of a pocket-filled mini purse. It also helps the tote stand up better while I'm digging through it. AND, I'm really impressed with the quality of it! I think it'll last me forever.

Genelle's 30th Birthday!

This last Friday marked the 30th birthday for my BFF.

She wanted to celebrate by taking her family to Texas Roadhouse for lunch on Saturday.

Her husband, Steve, and son, Jake.

I got her a sweet purple bag with a huge flower on it.

Purple is her favorite color.

Texas Roadhouse wanted to have everyone yell Happy Birthday to her and give her an ice cream sundae. But, she had to sit on a horse saddle to do it. The look on her face says it all! It was hilarious! I'm still surprised she did it.

Her son, Jake, was happy to help her finish the sundae.

On Saturday Howie and I enjoyed a lovely breakfast at Mimi's Cafe (the only thing Mimi's is good for in my opinion).

Afterward, we headed to the Kurt Bestor Concert at Abravanel Hall.

On Sunday night I went to Temple Square with my family.

Howie had to work that night so, he couldn't join us.

The lights were amazing, but for some reason they didn't put lights on the big, big trees.

That made me sad.

A Candlelight Christmas

We loved A Candlelight Christmas at This Is The Place Heritage Park last year so much that we had to do it again this year. First we visited Santa:

One of the houses in the village had a naughty and a nice list.

Whichever you chose to put your name on determined how much candy you got.

If you put your name on the "Naughty" list you got coal.

On the nice list you got a piece of taffy!

Miranda joined in the fun and also added her name to the nice list:

They had a little lit-up Christmas Village complete with little elves inside the houses.

We went to see the live Nativity and ran into some livestock...literally.

This little fella was loving the attention.

They had the same puppet show they did last year.

Mercedes was mesmerized.

We also learned a new little dance.

Mercedes made a tree ornament in one of the houses and later got to add it to their town tree.

Eventually we got hungry and stopped in to the Huntsman Hotel for some nice warm soup, breadsticks and hot chocolate.

It was delicious!

Then we took a ride on the train.

Gotta visit the sweet shop!

Mercedes got to write a letter to Santa in one of the houses.

It says "Dear Santa, I want a DSI. Love Mercedes."

(A DSI is a mini game console.)

After she wrote it she went outside to a fire pit and burned it. The idea is that the ashes carry the letter to Santa himself. So cute.

They had live reindeer there!

We really enjoyed A Candlelight Christmas again this year.

I'm glad my Aunt Opal and cousin, Josh, could make it, too!

Dipping Chocolates

Last night we went to my Mom's to dip some Christmas chocolates.

Howie and I provided the red and green chocolate.

We made a mess of her kitchen pretty quickly.

It was a lot of fun even though I couldn't partake of any of the results.

(I might've sampled a small piece of a cashew cluster just to make sure it turned out ok.)

Man, I have had the best luck lately!

And yesterday I received an email saying
"Congratulations! You're a winner!"
for some Harry Potter tickets.

Yay! I never win anything!
(that's not true, but isn't that what you're supposed to say?)
I used the $100 to buy me some greatly needed clothes. I gave away all mine recently to my sisters so, it's only fair that I get some new ones, right? I thought so.

The Harry Potter tickets we're torn about because I had already bought tickets for Friday night and we have great seats. Their show is on Saturday afternoon and the seats are unknown. The tickets have numbers on them, but not a specific row so, I'm afraid they are first come first serve, BUT we can invite friends to come with us...what to do?

Handmade Whiteboards

I do not claim myself to be a very crafty person, but I got this idea from a coworker and decided to try it out. They are handmade whiteboards made with picture frames.

I bought these for $3-$4 each at Walmart.

Took over my Mom's Criket machine for the night.

Borrowed scrapbooking paper from my Mom.

And made these fun whiteboards for the ladies I visit teach!

This one is for a younger girl we teach.

This one is for a Mother of three.

I thought this one would be fun for a lady we visit that is raising her grandson.

She can put happy moments that make her smile on this board like "Jeremy aced his test!" or "Good luck on your soccer game!".

I thought they turned out pretty cute and I was pretty proud of myself.

I can't wait to give them to the ladies we visit!

(and to all you regularly crafty people out there, this was my first attempt so don't judge!)

Oahu - Part 2

Day 3

This was one of our casual days where we decided not to plan anything just incase we found something we wanted to do. We slept in and then headed to the Honolulu Hard Rock Cafe for lunch.

I really wanted to see Iolani Palace. Iolani Palace is the only royal palace on U.S. soil. The only problem with the palace was their hours. They only have it open from Tuesday through Saturday and only from 9am to 3pm. This didn't fit in with our schedule. So, we dropped by on a Sunday just to walk around a bit.

To our surprise and amazement the palace just so happened to be open to visitors because of an event they had going on! So, we got to go inside! Unfortunately, they don't let you take pictures though. But, I was so happy we got to see it.

Then we jumped in the car and took a drive up to the north shore!

The sights to see on the north shore are incredible. If we ever go back to Oahu again we're definitely staying up there. It was beautiful. I couldn't really get a lot of pictures because the road is really narrow and there weren't a lot of places to stop and pull over. It's a shame really, but these will have to suffice. We stopped at this funky store for a potty break. I ended up buying a cute Hawaiian sarong from there. It was only $4!

Day 4

Today was another highlight of Oahu for me. We planned a dolphin excursion at Sea Life Park on the east coast of Oahu.

Howie didn't find swimming with dolphins very exciting so, I did it by myself. I didn't mind because Howie turned out to be an excellent photographer for me!

First I got to do a dolphin foot push.

We got to pet the dolphins as they swam by us.

The dolphin instructor said for us to "Give these guys a round of applause!" and as soon as we started clapping one of the dolphins swam by us splashing us with his fin!

It was so funny!

After my dolphin excursion we checked out the rest of the park.

We saw sea turtles and got to feed them.

We sat and watched a sea life show. It was so cool to see the dolphins do tricks!

They brought out sea lions that did a ton of tricks!

The park was set right on the coast. Beautiful!

When we'd had enough of the park we went back to the hotel, showered and went into Honolulu for dinner. After searching for a place for a while we settled on Senor Frog's. Ever been to one? It's so weird.

The staff felt that they needed to constantly entertain everyone dining there.

First they got up and did a line dance to "Cotton Eye Joe".

The rest I didn't get pictures of because I was trying to enjoy my meal. But, they came out to sing Happy Birthday to a girl at another table and sprayed her with a huge can of condensed air...multiple times. (I've got to admit it was a funny sight to see.) They started playing a loud song that had buzzing sounds in it and then all of the sudden a large man wearing a fly suit...and a diaper...came out and walked around to different tables. And lastly, right before we were about to leave, they started playing a Tequilla song overhead and then a group of workers came out with a bottle and started tilting peoples heads back to give them a taste of whatever they had. They came to our table and I was afraid to try it thinking it was alcoholic. Luckily, after they splashed it in my mouth I could tell instantly that it wasn't so, it was all good. I think it was a blueberry margarita mix without the alcohol. Anyway, we were pretty happy to leave that restaurant. We didn't know what was going to happen next!

We walked back to our car and came across this cute little shopping area called King's Village.

It was cute!

Day 5

On our last full day in Oahu we toured the fabulous Pearl Harbor.

Here is the anchor from the U.S.S. Arizona.

On the boat out to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial.

Here are the names of the men that died on Decmeber 7, 1941.

Here are the men that survived the attacks and died later.

There are still 21 survivors alive today. When they die they will request to be burried back with their crew. They do this by cremating them and putting the urn down an entry hole on the ship.

Here is the oil that has been leaking from the ship for over 60 years now. The remaining survivors believe that the oil is a result of the ship crying for it's lost crew members and once they have all passed on and been returned to the ship the oil leak will stop.
I guess we'll see in time if that is correct!

We got to see the U.S.S. Oklahoma memorial.

Then we toured the massive U.S.S. Missouri.

This ship is still owned by the military even though it's a museum now. They could still use it today if they needed to. Even with it's age, it's still able to keep up with ships they use today.

This dent in the side of the boat marks the spot where a kamikaze plane hit it.

Inside the U.S.S. Missouri were cramped quarters unless you had a pretty high rank in the military. I wouldn't have wanted to be an average crew member on board. No thanks.

After seeing the Missouri our tour took us to Ford Island to see a plane museum.

We got to see the Ford Island Control Tour, but seeing was it.

The building is full of asbestos so, it's not open to the public.

There are future plans to renovate it though.

Maybe next time!

The last thing we toured was the U.S.S. Bowfin Submarine.

Very cramped quarters on here, too.

We loved this tour. Very neat!

The next day we flew home. :(

Oahu - Part 1

Day 1

Oahu definitely moves at a different pace than Maui. We got into our rental car and headed into Honolulu. Almost immediately I didn't feel comfortable driving in Honolulu. Their roads were crazy and there was just so many people! Luckily, we had our trusty iPhones and they helped us navigate through the crazy city. We checked into our hotel, The Ala Moana, and took a nap. When we were ready to eat we decided to find a restaurant called Duke's. It's named after Duke Kahanamoku, the world's most famous surfer.

I went off of my "no sugar diet" in Hawaii which got me into a lot of trouble.

Here is the Hula Pie we got for dessert at Duke's.

You can bet your bottom dollar we polished off the whole entire thing.

The restaurant was right on Waikiki Beach and they had a live band playing. Just a beautiful setting, really.

We took a walk along Waikiki Beach.

and watched the sun set...

I had low expectations of Waikiki Beach because everyone I had talked to said it was a "dump". I mean, it was crowded with a lot of people, but it was far from what I would call a dump! It's still a beautiful beach. I would take that over a Great Salt Lake beach any day!

After our walk on the beach we shopped around the International Marketplace for a bit.

We found these Hawaiian ladies putting on a show.

We sat and watched them for a while and continued on.

I got to pick out an oyster of my choice at one of the stores to see what color of pearl I would get. I got a gold pearl which stood for prosperity. I love it! Someday I'll mount it on something.

Day 2

Day two was a highly anticipated trip to the Polynesian Cultural Center.

We paid big bucks for the Super Ambassador tour which meant we had our own personal guide the entire day and front row seats at every show in every village.

Pretty scenery we floated by.

It was nice having a guide to take pictures of us everywhere we went.

Here we are with the leaf fishes we were taught how to weave.

Something neat that happened at the PCC was meeting a young girl (maybe 23 or so) who worked there and was also a student at BYU-Hawaii. She asked us if we'd gone to see the temple yet, because she knew we were members, and we replied that we hadn't yet. And she said to us "Oh, you must go! You get on the shuttle and it's literally a 5 minute drive and it's just right there! I couldn't believe how close it was when I got here..it's just right there!" You see, she was from Mongolia where the closest temple in proximity is in South Korea. She would have to leave her country just to visit the temple. We are so lucky to have so many temples close by. I was almost afraid to tell her that we have 12 temples within a 2 hour drive from home. The things we take for granted.

Each culture had their own canoe to show us their dance on.

Aotearoa (New Zealand), Samoa

Fiji, Hawaii

Tonga, and Tahiti.

We got to participate and be a part of a very cool ritual in the Aotearoa Village. They selected us because we were the only Super Ambassador's in the crowd. A girl explained everything that was going to happen and why. We were pretty nervous being thrown into this, but it was really cool. (Mind you, everyone that was at the show watched this all go down so, we had quite an audience.) Below you'll see the girl explaining things, then a guy came running out at us speaking a bunch of jibberish and presented an offering to Chief Howie.

Howie accepted the offering and so we had to bring it with us into the Aotearoan hut.

Once inside the hut, the village Chief showed Howie the welcoming handshake and then the "Breath of Life".

Then this lady came out to explain some more about why they do what they do and to introduce Chief Howie.

Then she had me come up so Howie could pass me the "Breath of Life", as well.

It was a cool thing to be a part of! Our guide said only three couples get to do this every day and we were one of the lucky ones!

We got pretty hungry later on and couldn't wait to get to the Luau!

The smoothies in pineapples were delicious!

We got our chance to visit the Laie Temple.

Unfortunately, it's being renovated and so we weren't able to do a session.

At the end of the day the PCC put on an amazing show called

"Ha-Breath of Life".

This day came in a very close second for our favorite day. In fact, I think it was Howie's favorite. We really enjoyed the PCC!

Maui - Part 3

Day 5

On this day we got to go sailing to the little island of Molokini, a dormant volcano just off the coast of southern Maui. We met up with our group at this shack on Makena Beach.

Dolphins joined us on our sailing trip!

There aren't any sea turtles at Molokini so, the crew took us to a location where we were more likely to see some. They are so neat to watch!

We loved the charter company we went with on this excursion. They provided a snack on the way out to Molikini and lunch on the way to the turtles. Very cool crew. We loved it!

Day 6

Well, due to our activity on day 5, on day 6 we did absolutely nothing. I have one picture from day 6 and it isn't a pretty one. I'm only going to show you a small portion of it though.

We got absolutely fried. I mean ultimate fried. Fried beyond belief. So fried that it affected the rest of our trip. We tried aloe, we tried apple cider vinegar, and neosporin.

Nothing was soothing this burn.

On day 6 I could barely even wear clothes.

It hurt that bad.

I can't emphasize it enough. It was Hell on my skin.

A few days later I had blisters on the back of my legs.

Second degree burn.

My legs and feet retained water trying to flush the toxins out.

It was awful!

Day 7

The final day in Maui we were somewhat back in business. Howie was fine, but my body was still very sore. I just tried to press on and not let it slow me down.

We visited beautiful Iao Valley.

It rained on our way there so there was this really cool mist of clouds everywhere.

Can I vent for a second?
Howie didn't want to hike up to see the Iao Needle so, I was left to go at it alone. Which meant that once I got there I had to rely on other peoples picture taking skills for my sacred memories.

I have no tripod.

(subtle hint for a Christmas present right there.)

So, that should explain to you why there is a little girl in the photo next to me.
Some people are not natural-born photographers like myself.
(It was actually the daughter of the lady that I asked to take my picture. And can I just add that this young girl surpassed the acceptable age for a binky about two years ago.)

At least she got the Iao Needle in the pic, which I cannot say for the first person I asked to take my picture

C'mon people.
If I am standing in front of a major landmark and asking you to take my picture...chances are I want that major landmark in the picture.
I'm just sayin'.
There were more beautiful views to see in the valley.

I really enjoyed it.

We decided to eat dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe on Front Street before going to the highly anticipated magic show at Warren & Annabelle's.

These magicians were amazing!

They were absolutely hilarious!

This ended our time in Maui. The next day we were off on a plane to Oahu!
